I don't know how many of you here may be familiar with the game Wolfenstein 3D, which was the first game to take the first person shooter game to a real level (inspired from the likes of games like Battle Zone), but surely many of you here have at least heard of one of the popular and modern FPS games called Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Wolfenstein 3D practically goes back to the roots of the mass-marketing monster FPS gaming has become: Half-Life, Halo, Doom 3, etc can in some way be traced back to Wolfenstein 3D.
The game is pretty basic: You must make it through each level collecting guns, ammunition, treasure, keys to doors, extra lives and health sources to survive and score points, all the while fighting off the Nazis you encounter with your knife, pistol, machine gun or chaingun. The game came before things like varying ceiling/floor heights and the like were invented, making there only be the same level of height for every level. It sounds pretty basic and boring when you hear it, but I just finished beating Episode 1 the other night and it's a very fun game.
Discuss this game.

Is this freeware/shareware? If so, where can I get it?
I've heard of Wolfenstein, since I'm a big fan of Doom, but I've never actually played it.

You can download the shareware version of the game here: www.dosgames.com/g_3d.phpJust scroll down to the bottom. There you will see the game title, some info and a download link. Click that link and then I guess you're set.

Click that link and then I guess you're set. Awesome Link ... It Has the original Quake havent played that in forever, gotta play it again. And now for some sweet Nostalgia.. I have some awesome memories of Quake too. I remember just clocking the demo over and over and over, then getting the full game and then clocking that one again and again and again, on Nightmare, without wanting to hesitate. I eventually became so obsessed with the game that not a single day would go by where I wouldn't play through it at least once on Nightmare. I wrote entire survival guides and ideas for mods for the game, but alas I only kept them all to myself and then lost them when my hard-drive somehow got fried. Hell, there even came a point when I was so into Quake that whenever I walked around in real life, my brain was so impulsively trained on Quake that it would react to certain things based on how it acted whenever I played Quake. For example, whenever I saw someone, my brain would immediately make decisions on what to do based on the environment and the individual as if I were in Quake. So if someone were coming from around the corner, my brain would impulsively say 'QUICK! USE THE GRENADE-LAUNCHER TO BOUNCE AROUND THE CORNER AND HIT THE ENEMY!' And if the person were in a distant and open space, my brain would impulsively say something like 'QUICKLY FIND A SNIPING POSITION YOU CAN TAKE COVER BEHIND. FIRE A ROCKET FROM THAT POINT AT THE ENEMY, THEN TAKE COVER BEHIND THAT SNIPING POSITION. IF THE ENEMY IS LURED TOWARDS YOU, CAREFULLY CONTINUE THIS PROCESS UNTIL THE ENEMY GETS TOO CLOSE. THEN QUICKLY AMBUSH THE ENEMY WITH A DOUBLE-BARRELED SHOTGUN.' And if there was a widespread of small people (i.e. 1st-graders) in my sight, my brain would impulsively say, 'QUICK! LINE UP THE ENEMIES AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AND THEN FIRE AT THEM WITH THE SUPER NAILGUN!' Not that I ever really followed my brain's impulsive orders (thank goodness), but I became so addicted to Quake that deep inside me somewhere I lived in the world of Quake all the time. In fact, I became a really jumpy individual because my mind was so trained on Quake. All the time I would always be very cautious before I entered a room and was really jumpy and frightened to the slightest movements or sounds. Heck, I'll tell you what, I became so obsessed with that game that I sometimes managed to skip breakfast or lunch because of that game and would stay up until so much as to not even sleep the entire night at all (on weekend nights, on school nights I would stay up until 11 pm) going on hourly Quake-playing rampages. I was never so addicted to a video game in my entire life, and probably never will be again. I can tell you one thing everybody: When things like this start to happen, that's when you have to realize that you are playing the game WAY TOO MUCH. It's a good thing that I didn't let the game take over priorities like homework or chores or school, because that would have really screwed everything up. But yeah, I remember playing that game all the time in 6th grade, especially whenever I had a really bad day (which, at that period of time, was almost every day). Playing Quake is a good way to let out your inner frustrations, especially if you're the quiet, implosive, reclusive type of individual like I am (sometimes, anyway). Oh, I'm starting to ramble now, but that's my big story on Quake.

Oh god, my friend Jason just downloaded that game. It's all he is going to talk about in math class now.
I wouldn't get it myself. I hate first person shooters.

Dang, struggle, you really liked Quake. Then again, that's me and Descent. Or Doom, or Half-Life.
After playing Wolfensten 3D, I've gotta say I like Doom better. I don't know why, I guess I just like owning demons instead of Nazis. It's too bad Quake runs too slowly in DOSBox, the only way I could remotely play the game, it looked interesting. Oh well, there's always Deathmatch Classic.
