The TCPA is the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance, its an organization in the U.S. which is trying to make it to where you can only use TCPA-approved hardware & software. Although nothing has been passed yet, there is a bill in Congress which is trying to get this whole thing to work. In the end, in order to use a computer in America, it would have to be of a TCPA-approved nature. Otherwise it would be considered illegal. The TCPA takes your freedom in choosing what you want in your computer. Sounds bad, eh? Find out more, see whos on the list, and sign the petition at: www.againsttcpa.com/index.shtml

Thats bad. Is TCPA only for USA users? If it is, there's a chance the world will follow it. That would be real bad.

There is a reason why PC stands for "Personal Computer." There is no "default" or "standard" operating system or namebrand company. Microsoft monopolizes the industry, but users have the freedom to use another OS such as Linux. And I can't picture Microsoft ever following a standard. They have done nothing but disobey them and try to create their own. Their site isn't even compliant with the oldest and most forgiving web standards. Their browser disregards every rule of the standards of HTML. And if this TCPA organization takes over, it could only mean disaster. Lower brand hardware manufacturers would go out of business. More well known manufacturers would be charged liscensing fees and the prices would go up. And once their competition is gone, quality drops and prices will continue to shoot up. This will limit the growth of our technology for certain if this takes place.

Well if sucha thing did happen, theres an easy solution: DON'T BUY COMPUTER PARTS OR A COMPUTER. Stick with the one(s) you have right now. And if you feel the end to choice is near, set yourself up with a new one soon.

If I coulden't use Linux on my computer I wouldn't use a computer at all. if/when this happens I will wait for my existing computers to break, then completely forget about computers all together they have no right what so ever to take control of something that you have paid for...

First computers - then the world! If this happens, it might even spread to other electronics, and soon all the world would be defaultized with one kind of TV's, fridges, furniture, etc. I dunno, they might even approve or dissaprove food, and all we'll be eating would be from McDonalds, and stuff. That would be the total downfall.
Say, whats with that site? What are they trying to say/do?

I hope that this gets doesn't even get the chance to be voted on in Congress. IMO, it sounds like one of the most rediculious bills, right next to the bill that would limit CPU's over 666 mthz (low end p3) to be exported out of the US since it would be a "Terrorist threat." If this goes through, then what's next? A forced standard for hot dogs?

Sounds like something that won't get through...at least not now. If the USA starts to rule with an iron glove, then maybe it will, but not now.

Grr... this is exactly the thing i hate. Limiting on what pc parts you can buy. If this is passed, its gonna pass on to other electronics and this country will be running on a very narrow 1 way rail road. If they pass that law, i dont care if it has their tags or not on it, i am still getting pc stuff legal or not cause we have the right to choose what we buy.
A Consequence: "The liberty of opinion and the free speech on the internet would finally be eliminated" -www.againsttcpa.com That has gone WAY too far this time...

besides they cant do that. that breaks an emement.limiting on what you can buy or not, that takes away our freedom. If that happend then I would get the illegal stuff. heck if enough people do it we would have our freedom back. [think about the alchol emements]

Okay, here is why i am mad at this team (TCPA). The reason is that it has a chance of passing cause many people see the computer world as a huge hazard. There used to be an old news report where people make different comments on if the net is safe or not. The argument they used was a young girl was murdered by someone she met on the net... That was unsafe to many, but really, common sense tells you whats right. Obviosly this girl didnt use her common sense and game up all her personal info...
Before i go off topic anymore... TCPA seems like it was made by those who think the computer world is unsafe...

Hey there, The is no way they can do that, its taking away your gith of privacy. Spyware, Adware, virus's, stupid organisation like this is why need patches and expsensive computer systems every year. Most computers are watched byt he governemt, Its a fact, they even admitted it, To be honest, The public has opinions about people, if i do something online and they find out they may not like me naymore, the government doesn't shoose these people in these organizastions nor are the binded to keep it confidential, My PC is mine, i didn;t pay all this money for somoen else to use it or look at it in anyway. I think i'm going Linux if this happens, then at least they can't explore my file sytem as easily, but alas Linux may be illegal someday

A lot of you sound like you're forgetting one thing, that this is happening in America. Most countries have more common sense than the US does, so for starters, most countries probably won't accept TCPA standards. And two, if such a thing ever goes into effect, just move to another country.

Uhh I don't think people will see logic in moving to a diffrent country because of a computer law Verde. If something like this does go into effect I would actually go against them and call others to join me and destroy such a thing.

That's just stupid. American's are slowly getting more and more repressed. The government really wants you guys under its thumb, huh? This TCPA thing is stupid, and the very idea behind it is unconstitutional in America, as far as my understanding of the American constitution goes. Then again, your current government doesn't give a damn about the constituion, or even common decency, for that matter. If this bill gets passed, as it is not for the benefit of American's, I would expect to see a government overthrow. Not to say I would encourage that action (Ever heard of the conspiracy charge, or the Patriot act? Not even citizens of other countries are safe to suggest such action.)
