You gotta hand it to Rockstar for coming up with a game which has sold over 9 million copies, has revolutionized the industry, and has joined the leagues of controversial titles. But as any hit series does, Grand Theft Auto is spawning the sequel (or should I say prequel?) and foray into the game's family: San Andreas. For nearly two long years, fans have eagerly anticipated the game's return after developer Rockstar North decided to try something new after releasing Vice City back in 2002. This would turn out to be the mediocre "Manhunt" (Having played it, snuff film-themed games aren't all that fun), however they were beginning work on San Andreas at the same time, so it wasn't a total waste of productive time.
Okay, the story goes a little like this: You're Carl Johnson (better known as CJ), a Black twenty-something gangster who has just been released from Liberty City Prison. He returns to San Andreas only to find his mother dead and street gang in ruins. As with any other GTA, you climb your way to the top and take out anybody whos behind the mess they left for you. The game takes place in 1994, in the fictional state of San Andreas (based loosely on California). You start off in Los Santos (Los Angeles), eventually making your way to San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturras (Las Vegas).
Even if you aren't a fan of GTA, you gotta admire the technical acheivements; You don't play in a city anymore, but rather a whole state with three major cities and a massive countryside with twelve small towns. The map alone is five times bigger than Vice City (thats VC's land and water area combined) On the subject of the map, there will be no more loading times in between cities, but only a slight pause when entering/exiting buildings (nearly all buildings in SA will have insides) There will be over 400 pedestrians, compared to the measly 40 in VC, not to mention that they now have "brains", meaning that they each will react differently instead of just running away or whatever. The police AI has also drastically improved, now SWAT teams can actually find you in your house/building and have strategies on how to take you out.
As Carl, you can't just go around killing people, you have to eat, exercise, practice good hygeine, then go around killing people. If you eat too much, Carl becomes fat and pedestrians will make fun of him. Same goes for a hair style, as you can get your hair cut & styled in game. You need to exercise and practice swimming in order to have a good stamina (yes you can finally swim). If you don't eat, Carl becomes weak & scrawny, so there is also very much a "virtual life" aspect to the game as well. Take good care of yourself and you'll be the baddest gangster out there.
There will be just as much weapons to choose from and a new targeting system, which allows you to target specific areas of the body, and also aim for cars/helicopters. The graphics have also taken a major step. Now there are real-time reflections and better distance drawing.
Rockstar manages to pack all these goods into the game by way of a dual-layer DVD. SA just peaks at over 9GB. And PC and Xbox owners, don't worry. San Andreas will make its way onto your systems after its PS2 release. The people who have played San Andreas say its a great experience that doesn't disapoint. And if you know Rockstar, you know they don't dissapoint.
There is so much I haven't included in this thread, I suggest visiting GTAGaming for more information.
