... Windows NT?
Anyway, this must of been the worm that I heard about on the news. I'm not concerned.
Listen, I have advice. Don't download any files. No matter where they come from... anyway, I am off to download a file. Trust me... I can do this. I have the best computre protection possible for a middle incom family.

Uh, that advice does not help with Sasser. Sasser searches for random IP addresses and gets into the computer through a security hole. ... Windows NT? Since so many of these worms take advantage of security holes in Windows and Internet Explorer, your entire address book is a profitable target for the spam market in any case.Always use Windows Update atleast weekly.

The bad thing about Windows Update on my PC is that when I last updated, it screwed up my sound card. I can still use it, but I can't play Starcraft, and sometimes Halo doesn't work after 30+ minutes.

You should search for patches to the games and / or download the latest drivers for your hardware to ensure compatibility.

Coincidently enough, I was looking up reports of this on Tuesday. I should download the patch just for security. Thanks for the heads up with the patch.
Edit: On second round, Windows Update claims there are no patches for me to undergo, so I must already have it.

[glow=blue,2,300]*blinks* Yep, I too am going to keep with my evil '98 for as long as I can. And eh, I'm afraid I've been a little too lazy to read everything on the thread, so I am also curious as to what the worm does.... I may have missed that tidbit of information if it had already been given.[/glow]

I can't remember what it is called exactly, I think is is Long Runner or something like that. I heard of it on TechTV. Anyway, as long as I keep my cracking skills and virus destroying skills up I (with the help of my sis) can get rid of Virus and worms.

I've been hearing about it for a while, though I can hardly remember anything about it. (All I remember right now is that it won't become "Windows Longhorn" just like there is no "Nintendo Dolphin").

The beta name is "Long Horn" (or is it Longhorn?), and it's supposed to have a 2-way firewall, instead of the 1-way FW that's build into XP. The thing that I'm concerned about Sasser is because the source is out in the open. Four days after the arrest of the creator of the Sasser worm, Sasser-F appeared out of nowhere. Literally someone with good hunting skills could find the source code, download, and tweak Sasser to make it even more destructable. I hope that people will take computer security somewhat seriously (especially M $). By getting a firewall and up to date anti-viral protection, you could easily make a windows 9x machine more secure than an up to date XP system. Edit: Is it just me, or does every forum that I go to hate quote and link ubb code?

I have had several people already blame me for that. Im innocent damnit! ^.< Yeah... I know enough to take a "out in the open" virus and modify it. However, I would never do that. I only try to find viruses to get rid of them. However, each time my team gets there... its already been taken and it usually comes back worse. ^^; So there are other people that hunt down viruses to delete them as well as evil demon people. Yay a 2way Firewall. That will be helpful.

Edit: Is it just me, or does every forum that I go to hate quote and link ubb code? The biggest security threat to most web surfers is Internet Explorer. Microsoft doesn't believe or understand the importance of security. Even the US-CERT (government organization) has been warning people about the dangers. Microsoft created ActiveX, which IE supports. A web page using an ActiveX script has full access to read and write your registry and files. This is how a site can add pages to your favorites and change your homepage without even asking! They can also install spyware and viruses with the intent to gather stored personal information from autocomplete and cookies. Outlook Express allows this proprietary scripting language to be included in emails. If you're using that, all it takes is for you to open a bad email to put your entire address book in danger of spreading the virus. Internet Explorer is the only browser that supports ActiveX. It's also the only browser currently used that hasn't had an update since 2001. If anyone is serious about security and web standards, get Mozilla or Firefox. They're updated every night!

Longhorn...what a treat thats going to be. You won't be able to use software made for previous Windows versions (98, XP). Its not supposed to come out until 2006/2007. And I'm pretty sure Microsoft would have come up with a version of Windows which is stable and secure. (The last sentence was pure sarcasm)
No, the only reason Windows gets so many viruses, worms, and trojan horses is because its what 96% of all computers are running. So why not irritate 96% of all computer users? In case you don't know why the majority of computers run Windows, back in the day Microsoft had a grip on PC manufacturers, where if those manufacturers chose to put Windows on their PCs, then Windows is all they could put on it. No Unix, no Amiga, nothing else but Windows. Eventually the Department of Justice got wind of this, and declared Microsoft as a monopoly because of that, and the whole Internet Explorer thing (but thats another story)

Have you guys heard of the hardware they think we'll have then, rediculosely high spec 8GB of ram or something like that and graphics cards that are 6 times better than the very best that are currently available, I can't remember the exact specs but it was insane. It's all bloatware I don't see why programs such as that paperclip could require so much resources. Thats good advice on the switching to mozilla or firefox I would recomend firefox if you are switching from IE it's just that little more user friendly and much better than IE oh XFox do you read slashdot?

^ Yes, Firefox is incredible. But that still doesn't change the fact that I'm using Windows. Eventually I'm going to buy myself a Mac so I can use OS X. No viruses, looks great, runs off of Unix. You could say the only problem with Macs is the price tag.

FireFox? Isnt there a problem with it that causes it to inccorectly view phpbb sites? hum I haven't had a problem with PHPbb it could be something to do with the cookies settings, technically it is imposible for php sites to be displayed incorectly since the php file is processed on the server an not locally, PHP outputs HTML, XHTML or whatever you tell it to so the only problem that should arise would come from bad coding pratises, that is why it is important to follow the standards set forth by w3.org . I have only just started following these standards and hope to have all my pages conform to the standards firefox is seriously good though I can't bring my self to use IE any more I especially like the tabs and the way the bookmarks are displayed also that little search bar is excelent I have add alsorts of searches to it. and acording to slashdot or something else I have read firefox one will be a vast improvement although I don't see how they can improve on perfection.
