I've read that Kitsunes (foxes), according to Japanese legend, are supposed to gain another tail every 100 years. Wouldn't that make Tails 200 years old ?

No, because Tails is a fox in all the games, but it's okay to pretend he's a kitsune.

Aren't Kitsunes foxes or fox like beings though? Although Tails cannot shape-shift and he doesn't appear to be sly or a prankster he is wise, at least to some extent anyway. What exactly categorizes a character to be a Kitsune besides being a fox ?

Oh, I feel stupid right now, I didn't realize that Kitsune was the Japanese word for fox, but I think Tails just has two Tails, he is 8 after all.

Ok, but what classifies a character to be a Kitsune anyway?

Well a kitsune is literally the japanese word for "fox" (You thought it would be something uncommon, like "wise creature", didn't ya?). It's just that in their folklore, the wiser, older foxes had more Tails.

I did know that Kitsune is Japanese for fox, but it is also the name given to the Fox Spirit of Japanese folk lore. I would tell you more about it, but I'm typing on my PSP and I don't have the mini keyboard for it, so it takes forever to type anything. I'm on almost every night betweet 5:00 & 10:30 (eastern time) though if you would like to talk.

Why do you say that?

Because, it's not like some artist from Sega researched this in great detail when Tails was created. Heck unlike Knuckles, Cream and the rest, Tails wasn't even created by them. A boy did in a contest from Sega determining who was going to be Sonic's new sidekick. Tails' Tails isn't from Japanese folklore, its just really 2 Tails so he can mimic a helicopter's blades.

Yeah, if he was based on legend the other Sonic characters would almost have to be also. Tails would have to be a child because of the way he behaves on the SatAM series. But still, no one has answered my question about what classifies a character to be a Kitsune.

Tails was created before the SatAM series and he was described as a 4 and three quarters year old fox. SatAM isn't even related to what the games are about. It's nothing but another one shot DIC cartoon.

The character descriptions from the Olympic game press thing just states Tails is similar to a kitusne.
"Miles ‘Tails’ Prower: Sonic’s best friend is a fox with two Tails (similar to the mythological Japanese creature kitsune). Tails can fly for short distances by spinning his Tails like helicopter rotors, and he also maintains Sonic’s plane the Tornado with his expert mechanical skills. Tails is eight years old, a little less than three feet tall, and weighs 44 pounds."

Well, I don't know much about Japanese folklore, but I'm guessing they're godlike creatures.

I know what a Kitsune is and what its primary characteristics are, but how many and which of them are required to classify a charcter to be Kitsune?

Well, Tails isn't a kitsune, because kitsunes are shapeshifters that tend to turn themselves into beautiful women to seduce mortals

Well, Tails isn't a kitsune, because kitsunes are shapeshifters that tend to turn themselves into beautiful women to seduce mortals so do they eat them?
