I got an advanced copy of Mario Strikers Charged last nite from Nintendo. Now this is the sequel to my favorite Mario sports game on GameCube. Well does it match up?
Well like the original, it's the most mature Mario game out there. It is rated E10+. From the violence to the sexual themes from Peach(I swear if you play it, she says Princess Bitch too), you sort of understand why it ain't E like all other Mario games. Well onto the game, it's even more arcade-like than the previous one. It's all about ramming people out of your way, using power-ups like Koopa shells and Chain Chomps and do the insane Megastrike kicks to take out the Kremling goalie. This ain't for the FIFA fan.
Personally, I played the original game without Power-ups and the Special attacks turned off and have a less insane play. But you cannot do this in Charged off the get go. You are forced to play with the insanity that the game gives you. This is a turnoff for me because I dislike the Megastrikes, cause it fist of all starts a crappy tacked on Wii point and click minigame, totally interrupting the game. Not only that, if done right and the Kremling fails to block the shots, it can add 3-6 points to the score. Now a game to 10 Goals can end in 30 seconds if done right. That's the captains(Mario, Peach, DK etc), now the peons(Koopas, Boos, Hammer Bro, etc) have their own Megastrike, Which are VERY cheap shots to the goal, sometimes guaranteeing a goal. There's no soccer like this. Add the power ups and it barely resembles a soccer game. It's Smash Bros. Soccer.
Next is the Road to the Strikers Cup, which is a tournament to to the cups the game has to offer. Simple enough to explain.
Now also what differs is the controls too, of course it's similar to the GameCube one with tacked on Wii controls. Swinging the remote tackles while swinging the nunchuck toggles power-ups, it's really unnecessary and doesn't go good with an insane game like this. It's sad there's no way to switch to a GameCube Controller, but Nintendo doesn't allow their games to use alternative controllers with one exception, Smash Bros. Brawl.
What is done right though: online. The online is great (If you could turn off everything), Add friends, play them, see rankings online. It's fairly simple compared to Xbox 360 games today, but it gets the job done right.
Personally, I was disappointed cause it fails to do a simpler version, but if you loved the GameCube one with all the craziness, go get this one. But if you think it'll be too much for you, you're probably right. It comes out next week.
In other news, I was also disappointed with another title, Heavenly Sword's Demo for PS3. It's more watered down than God of War, as well as the inability to jump and unresponsive controls.
I'm so sick of being let down on games lately. With Blue Dragon pissing me off as well. August's Lair and Metroid Prime 3 better be good.
