I've decided.
It was a tough decision, seriously. And usually I have to make it a tie, but that really pisses me off when that happens, and it has happened before, so I took some time and reflected over what I played in 2006. I started off the year buying a 360 and getting Perfect Dark and Kameo, while Sonic Riders and Super Princess Peach came out in Feb. Snake Eater's remake came out in March with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance. Spring wasn't very big other than the New Super Mario Bros and Brain Age, but E3 was at that time so it was all about the Revolution's new name: Wii. I also was playing Dragon Quest VIII at that time. That started a huge drought in summer where the lackluster Prey was most of what I bought. September finally rolled its head and I started at GameStop, and it's also when Okami came out. October had little to offer but in November.... wow. FEAR, Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 made my 360 happy until it died, But I wasn't really pissed cause I was playing Zelda on the Wii. With Sonic not doing so hot, I went on to the DS with Final Fantasy 3 and Yoshi's Island leading the charts on that. December came around and I beat Zelda, Gears and Devil May Cry 1. So it was a good year in gaming, but with 2007 rolling around the corner with Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, Zelda DS, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, Metal Gear Solid 4, Halo 3 and so much more, I dunno what to do then.
Okay before the 2006 winner comes up, I want to tell you what was my Game of the year was for the previous years. How I do it is give 1 winner and 1 runner up, but like I said, I hate doing ties, but it happens. Not really a bad thing but I always want only one winner. So here are my past winners:
Marik’s Game of the Year
1996 (Tie) - Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Super NES)
1997 - Starfox 64 (Nintendo 64)
-Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation)
1998 (Tie) - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
- Pokemon Red/Blue (Game Boy)
1999 - Sonic Adventure (Sega Dreamcast)
Runner Up:
-Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64)
2000 (Tie) - The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Nintendo 64)
- Pokemon Silver/Gold (Game Boy)
2001 - Super Smash Bros. Melee (Nintendo GameCube)
Runner Up (Tie):
- Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
- Final Fantasy X (PlayStation)
2002 (Tie) - Super Mario Sunshine (Nintendo GameCube)
- Metroid Prime (Nintendo GameCube)
2003 - Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (Game Boy Advance)
Runner Ups (Tie):
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Nintendo GameCube)
- Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PlayStation 2)
2004 (Tie) - Tales of Symphonia (Nintendo GameCube)
- Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (Nintendo GameCube)
2005 - Resident Evil 4 (Nintendo GameCube)
Runner Up:
- Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PlayStation 2)
This can also change because I don't always play a game that came out that year in the same year.
But it was a tough choice for this year, I was really tied up about two titles in the end, and was actually gonna do a tie, but I decided on it. Now here's the runner up
Marik's Game Of the Year 2006 Runner Up:
A tough choice indeed, it hurts making this game second place. This game is outstanding, It's art, gameplay, story are just divine and anyone with a PS2 should get this ASAP. I can't even put it in words about it.
Now here it is: Marik's Game of the Year of 2006:
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii.
There's a reason it's a legend. New hardware need software to back it up, and putting the controller in my hand and starting it up was a big deal to me. Just like Super Mario 64 and the Nintendo 64, Zelda and Wii made the experience of having a new system feel so great. The dungeons are nicely executed and the story was great. Along with the beautiful landscapes and so much gameplay, I had to make it win.
In the end of the clash of two wolves, Zelda overcame Okami and secured the right of being my Game of the Year.
