I bought a Pegasus starter deck yesterday. I heard it's a good deck. One problem, though--I have no idea how to play! Any help?

Basically its in the rule book, but if you want to practice, get the rom for YuGiOh WorldWide Edition and it has most of the rules, and upperdeckentertainment.com answers FAQ too

I get the basic idea, its just the magic and trap cards that confuse me...

Magic cards are used during your own turn and Traps need to wait til your opponents turn, but after that you can play them anytime, unless its a counter with can only be used by a certain thing that happened(EX: Magic Jammer)(attack, Magic card played, Trap played, monster summoned etc) and QuickPlay Magic cards can be played anytime, but must be face down on the field if you want to play them during your opponents turn(like Mystical Space Typhoon)

I see. So these trap cards, which phase are they played in? And summons, how is "renlinquished" involved in a tribute?

Traps can be played at any phase anytime after the end phase when you put it down
For Ritual Monstersm, you need both the Ritual Magic Card and the Monster itself but you need to discard monsters until you get the # of stars the monster has(like Paladin of the White Dragon is a Lv 4 monster so you have to discard monsters until you get to 4) like you can use 2 Magican of Faiths cause 2 Lv 2's Equal 4 so you can summon it, Relicished is the easiest with only one star

How are Quick Play and Counter cards played?

Quick Play- play it normally:Main Phase and if face down: anytime, ex: Battle Phase, and during the opponents turn etc
Counter Traps are played only when an effect happens(EX: Magic Jammer can ONLY be played when a magic card is played, Negate Attack can only be played when an attack happens)

Just read the book, front to back, and should all come together. That's how I learned.

As soon as you realise that your skills are developing build 2 test decks and put them against each other
what i mean is build a burner and a contain deck for example and play against yourself the way you would play any other person you'll soon start to learn that deck inside out
