Damn. A lot of zones. What does the GBA and DS have? GBA is a 12-bit console. DS is a 24-bit console. But since the handheld system runs on RAM and not ROM, they can only hold very little. For example: you can have a Sonic 2-quality game with 5 levels; and on DS you could have a Sonic 3-quality game with about 10 levels. Now with the modern systems (PS3, XBOX360, REVOLUTION) you get memory cards with about 100 blocks. I don't know what a block is in ROM, but it only takes up 4 Blocks for Sonic Heroes. You could take up even less blocks with a 2d game because it lacks skins and polygons. Plus, it takes a lot of time to design all the character models, all the frames, BUT it only takes about a work day to create a sprite sheet for a main character. The basics would take about 5 days, plus the months it would take for level art, plus another month of programming; companies could release blockbuster games about twice a year. What d'ya mean when you say that the GBA is a 12-bit console? Isn't it supposed to be 32-bit? And could you figure out the ROM thru KBs? 'Cuz on a PS1 memory card, 15 blocks = 314 KBs. I'm not sure about it, but I know that your average PS1 cards is over 300 KBs. It should say that in the PS2's instruction manual.

The Genesis supports up to 32 megabits of ROM (that's 4 megabytes). 2 games that reached that limit were Sonic 3 & Knuckles (lock-on) and Sonic 3D Blast. It would also be impossible for Sonic Team to work on a new "classic" game with hundreds of zones. Everything would be rushed and the feeling would never be the same regardless of quanity. They could raise the quality to match the console's capabilities but then the players would still expect more if it were just the same game done over. The current limit they've been setting is 7 stages for the 7 chaos emeralds. This has been seen in all of the Sonic Advance games, Sonic Rush, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow. But Shadow was a little different, in which the 7 stages were determined by missions. I'm sure they'll try new things, but some will stay the same.

With today's technology, you could make up one awesome Sonic game. Just imagine if you were developing a new 2-D Sonic game for the PS3. You could put the tiniest of details in the stages. Could it be possible that if we developed a game such as that on the PS3 to make it almost look like Sonic X or something?
