August 24, 2005 - Last year was Puyo Puyo year at Sega, with new versions of the Sonic Team puzzler arriving seemingly every month. While this year has been pretty much silent on the Puyo Puyo front, that's about to change come November. On November 24th, Sega plans to release Puyo Puyo Fever 2 for the PS2, PSP and DS in Japan. The latest issue of Famitsu contains first details on the titles.
The basic Puyo Puyo gameplay that has made the series famous returns with Puyo Puyo Fever 2. So too do the colorful artwork and characters that have become synonymous with the series. This time, you have three main characters to chose from at the start of the game: Amity, Rafeena and Shigu. Shigu is the first male lead in the series.
Puyo Puyo Fever 2's biggest update comes in the form of a new portal world. The game is set in a small town called Purinpu Town. You can move around town, speaking with characters, taking on challenges, shopping and even checking your mail. As you play, you'll get lots of mail, including Christmas items and mini games.
The portal world links you to all the various gameplay modes. You'll find a nine course single player mode at the Purinpu Magic School. A bigger challenge is the incomplete tower, which requires that you perform specific tasks, such as making six puyos disappear simultaneously, in order to advance. This tower continues to grow as you play. Finally, there's the Osharena Omise, a shop where you can exchanges points for items that can be used to help out in both single player modes. The game includes 72 items in total.
Multiplayer play is also being planned, with the DS and PSP versions allowing for game sharing play. The PSP version of the original Puyo Puyo Fever allowed for two players to play on a single system. There's no word yet regarding the status of similar functionality this time.
Sega went crazy last year, releasing Puyo Puyo Fever on almost every single platform around -- even the Dreamcast! This year, while Fever 2 is starting off on just PS2, PSP and DS, we suspect it will spread to other systems in due course, and eventually to America.
It sounds fun!!! I have the first one for the DS and its great!
