I got the DS on the 21st at EBGames right when it came out. Amazingly, there was hardly anyone in line!
Anyway, Just to tell ya what its like so you know what your getting into.
The game cartridges are more thin and a bit taller. Take a Gamecube memory card and picture it being a bit thinner. Thats about the size of a game cartridge. Also, the end that goes into the system on the cartridge is open to air. ALWAYS keep your games in their case, especialy these since the gold metal is open to air. If it gets damaged, you -COULD- destroy the game...
The game cartridge port on the front of the unit will take in Gameboy Advanced game cartridges, and the back will take in DS cartridges. You can put both cartridges in at once, and select which game you wish to play at the menu with your Stylus.
The game unit has an Operating System that has setting for Date, Time, Pictochat, and DS Game Download (Use to connect to multiplayer games!). You can change the color of the toolbar on the top screen, and you also put in your nickname (for chats and multiplayer) and your birthday (Still pondering exactly what it will do). You can set an alarm on the handheld as well (Did not try it yet).
Also, for those that are eager to got it, you may find there isnt a Power Switch. Its now a Power Button. Flip open the DS and its on the left hand side (I had trouble finding it the first time...). Press it for a split second (Dont Tap too quickly or it wont respond). If you change any settings on the handheld itself, like date and time, it will say it must turn itself off. Say yes and it turns off automaticaly, then you can turn it back on. (Im not saying everyone here is stupid and doesnt know what to do. Im just saying some things so people dont go "What the heck!?")
The game graphics are great. Its like the nintendo 64 (we all know), but at the same time, the graphics are BETTER! Yes, it is a bit better. When playing the demo version of the Metroid game, the graphics were breathtaking, especialy since its for a handheld!
The games that came out for the DS focus on using the Stylus pen more and more. When playing the Sim Urbz, you have to use the stylus to scroll through menus, choose what you say, and for the main menu: its a record that when you spin, it scrolls through your selections like New, Load, Settings, and such.
But the FPS games are really fun, but are quite hard to control once you play it the first time. In the metroid game, the buttons on the left AND the right (left is D-Pad, right is 4 buttons in a diamond form) to Move forward, backward, and strafe left and right. The shoulder buttons are to shoot, and you use the stylus pen on the map to aim around. Tap on buttons to switch weapons, and to curl into a ball. Tap quickly (i think) on nothing will cause you to jump.
So yeah its kinda hard at first, but it REALLY pays off with what you can do!
I believe only Advanced and DS games can be played on this system. Nothing below Advanced will work.
In the Mario 64 game, yes, it is 4 players in Versus mode. Theres only 4 levels, including the fun "Hidden Slide Level". Theres 1 star in the field. If someone gets it, another appears. this will go on until 5 stars are captured. During the remaining time, you must hit your enemies or let them injure themselves to make them drop a star. Quickly dash and grab it then.
Other Rules in Mario 64 Vs: Yoshis can attack each other, but cannot attack (meaning eat) someone that has become Mario, Luigi, or Wario. To become one of those 3, you have to find their cap (Refer to the map on the bottom screen for color and location), and pick it up. You then morph into that charactor. Everyone starts out as a yoshi. In the level somewhere (the slide level ATLEAST doesnt have it), theres a yellow box containing a white feather. If you get it, you grow wings and can fly (Go ahead, irritate people that are after your stars!). Once the round is over, the winner is chosen by the amount of stars. If there is a tie, then it checks their coin amount. The one with the most Stars (and coins if a tie) wins.
If anyone here has it, post your opinion on how it works!
