Ok Now Nintendo will have a third piece of hardware, Its not the new Game Boy, its seprate...
The Nintendo 'mystery' device has been revealed. It is a two-screened hand held device code named 'Nintendo DS.'
Nintendo claims the dual screen layout will allow players to focus on more than one aspect of gaming at one time. For example, a game may allow a map or item selection on one screen while gameplay is done on another; or a sports game could have one screen with the whole game field/arena showing, with the other showing up close action; or even multi-tasking between multiple characters in a battle.
"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century," explains Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's president.
Nintendo DS features two separate 3-inch TFT LCD display panels, separate processors, and semiconductor memory of up to 1 Gigabit (128 MB). There is no word yet on the controls and/or how they will work.
Nintendo says the DS will be launched worldwide before the end of 2004.
It should be noted that the DS is not the successor to the Game Boy Advance, but it will be marketed separately from both the GBA and the GameCube.
Nintendo is currently in talks with third parties about publishing games on this new hand-held device.
Nintendo plans on fully revealing the DS at this year's E3 in May. You can expect our own coverage on the DS while we are at E3.

Okay, I am confused...I think I need a pic of this. They are not going to reveil it till E3? Man that is going to take to long. I wish they would just show us a drawing or something so we can get the ideal of what it is.

I have a pretty good idea. Has anyone played Battleship? IF so, then you know how there's the plane on the bottom for your ships and one that stands up to keep track of your hits and misses. That's how I picture this will be used and it may have a similar foldup feature like the SP has. We'll have to see if I'm even remotely close.

Wow. I have to see one of these. It sounds cool, but I don't think I'd want one. They seem complex. Does anyone know if it will be able to play all of the old games?

It probably won't be compatible with older games (judging by the successor note). I don't think Nintendo would kill off the GBA either. So it's hard to tell. GBA is still selling quite welll and the SP has taken off pretty fast (alot faster than the model 3 Genesis). But can they keep both of these portables alive at once? Or will this new system be overlooked and suffer the same situation as the N-Gage?

Youre right XFox its totally different from GB. Nintendo is running 2 handhelds at the same time. IT is NOT a GBA successor, that would be stupid after all the hit sales it took in 2003. Its like 50 million total worldwide since the GBA's release, a hell of alot more than PS2, GCN and XBox. Its cool with the 2 screens, it makes the mind make the left eye focus in the left screen and the right with right, its weird, i wonder how Nintendo will use this technology....

Well the DS will make me happy if it has the basics. An LCD screen, and a headphone Jack.
Heh, Nintendo is finally trying to one-up Sony.
What if the DS uses discets? Would you still be able to play the GB games?

With the GBA and GCN combined they're doing better than Sony, Sony wants to dominate so they send in a handheld too, Nintendo creates the DS to fight the PSP while GBA and GCN continues to have the first hand.

Marik, it really isn't like that. i recently did a school poll, and I asked which system is best. 21% said GameCube 30% said Playstation 2 and the remaining 51% said X-Box.
Don't mind teh X-Box data, but look. There is a 9% difference. And there are 280 students in my school (YES! THAT LITTLE FOR 4 GRADES!)
I am going to take my poll online soon, and I want their opinions. However, the impression I got from this data, Nintendo's gamecube is terrible and still going down.

Actually no. The age group that my school is (12-16) is the age group of Video Games. Otherwords, it means that at the age my school is in, we are the most likley to know which system is the best and to have our parents to buy. Now this age group effects bits of the econamy. And Nintendo is losing fans! ITS LOSING!

I am going to take my poll online soon, and I want their opinions. However, the impression I got from this data, Nintendo's gamecube is terrible and still going down. Compare Sonic Heroes on Gamecube or XBox with the PS2 version and you decide if the PS2 is the console of choice for new games. Some people are ignorant and will buy something just because everyone else buys it, regardless of price. It's similar to those people at every school walking around with a $300 pair of shoes just for the spam and advertised name it says on it that doesn't affect the quality in any way (and then they go around begging for money at lunch ). The PS and PS2 have a large library of games, but the system's parts and capabilities are still quite pitiful. The console has had so many revisions. Off the top of my head, there were 2 playstation models. The original could play imported games and had a port in the back that the old Gamesharks used. The new model looked identical except for a few changes. I only noticed that they removed that port in the back and the black area inside where the lens was in a different area (one of the models had it horizontal, the other diagnal). Back then, if you were selling a PS to a game or video store,, they may have been kind enough to ask what model it was in order to determine the price. Then came along the PS-One and the PS2. There's been several different PS2s that have different parts inside them. It could either be unannounced hardware upgrades or they finding less valuable parts to use. Here's a fun idea. How about you interview those PS2 fans in your school and take a survey on how often their PS2 or other systems have broken down?

*interviews myself Has your Play Station 2 ever broken down at all
No. The only time I ever had trouble with it was when I was playing MegaMan X 7 the day after my dad put in a new DVD player, a wire fell out of the back. Of corse, it was all his fault, because the wire wasn't secure enough.
XFox the only other person, is my friend Danie, and she hasn't been on in days.

If you came to my college, the techs have XBox and plays it in the auditorium projection screen. the majority of dorms have GCN cause of Melee and their other exclusives. PS2 is right behind. Not alot of XBoxes though, dont blame them. but thats my school

And I thought kids in college would be playing more "M" rated games. Yet the kid who lives next door to me is only 12 years old and plays "M" rated games.

well the majority of gamers are 18-21 so i guess M rated games might be famous games, but rating doenst mean anything, i mean everyone i know that has a GCN has WindWaker and theyre all my age too

Heres a little fact: I think it was either game informer or game pro that had a mini article that said gamers are getting older. Here in America the average gamers are getting older, so older generations are beginning to play video games. Good fun they are.
And if you think Video Games are popular here in America, go to South Korea. There are people in their 70's that play Halo. How cool is that?!

The Nintendo DS, eh? I heard that one screen would be on top of the other, so it would be nice for a Battleship game, like XFox said. So much for the 3D theory of one eye looking at one screen, and the other eye looking at the other screen. I would've liked to see a Super Smash Bros. game in true 3D.
Besides, another Game Boy will be coming out soon after the DS from what I know. The N5 (the code name for the newest Nintendo console) is still pretty much a mystery. Nintendo's so secretive...
Anyway, I've also found out that in US sales, PS2 used to top, but now it's GCN that tops. Xbox has yet to reach that point. (NOTE: I'm not sure about this info)
Also, if you look at Game Informer's choice for greatest game of this generation, it's Wind Waker, and we all know that Game Informer's reviewers are NOT kids.
By the way, my PS2's only problem is with playing my LOTR DVD.

The PSP was delayed until 2005 now i bet its because they wanna see the new competition...

You mean more like they don't want the competition to see them. Anyway, the DS looks exactly as I pictured it (see an earlier post in this topic for my description).

If the DS fails then it might be the end of Nintendo of America and Europe.
