I'm thinking about buying an xbox 360 sometime next year, but is the Pro bundle worth the extra $100 or should I just get the core?

Pro, definately. The backwards compibility makes the $100 worth it alone.

Core is garbage. First they don't sell so you'll get an older model, and the older one tend to break. Second you need memory, a memory card is 40 and the HDD is 100 and the HDD has:
1) Ability to be backwards compatible with 200 Xbox games 2) Download content from marketplace like demos, games, movies etc. 3) 50X more memory than the card Pro has the HDD in the box, along with HC component cables, a wireless controller instead of wired, a headset and an ethernet cable. That's roughly 160 bucks in accessories for 100.
For the record, you won't have 100% usage for the 360 with out Xbox Live. Not just playing online, it feels like an entire community. The Marketplace is great for having the newest demos, trailers (like the Halo 3 stuff now) and just started doing TV shows and movies.

Wow, I didn't know how bad the core was! How much is xbox live? can't you pay a yearly subscription?

To d/l stuff, watch shows etc, it's free(with high speed internet and you need Live points to d/l full games and TV Shows), but in order to play other people, it's $50/yr.

One more question, what is the difference between the silver membership and the gold membership, and what does the pro come with.

I just really said the difference:
Silver (free): Use Marketplace (d/l demos, Arcade games, trailers, TV Shows, etc) Create Gamertag and display profile online
Gold (The one you pay for): All Silver's stuff Play games online
Both Core and Pro comes with Silver, but some games come with a free trial. Gears of War gives you a free 48 hour Gold account.
