Remember the Virtua Fighter games on the Saturn and Dreamcast? Now Sega has brought them back and made an RPG-like beat-em-up. If you liked games like Streets of Rage, Final Fight, and Fighting Force, give this a try. Fans of other series such as Sonic, Megaman Battle Network, Metroid, and Phantasy Star Online may also like this game.
Storyline (contains a few spoilers, but only what you would learn within the first 15 minutes of gameplay).
The story takes place in the future. You play as Sei, the son of an engineer of the virtual reality world known as Nexus. On his birthday, Sei received a Hunter's Glove from his father. His friend Hayami explains how it is useful in the virtual world. He talks Sei into entering one of the forgotten servers to search for lost data in order to raise money for air bike parts. Upon entering Nexus, Sei encounters security bots. After escaping, a mysterious girl explains that someone is after him and that he should leave at once. Sei's navigator, Bit notifies him that the logout command has been blocked. Sei learns from another Hunter in Nexus that his only way to log out of the server is to seek out the Virtua Souls and learn how to fight. He must defeat the Root User (boss) of the server to logout.
Gameplay
You defeat enemies to earn data chips which you can spend on upgrades to equip and boost your stats. Find the hidden tokens to challenge the data of the Virtua Fighters, defeat them to learn their attacks. You can equip different "Souls", allowing you to customize Sei's abilities and combo attacks to your liking. You'll also gain experience at the end of each stage depending on what rank you get (like emblems in Sonic games) which will increase your Hunter Level. All stages are revisitable, don't worry about missing a Soul or needing restock up on items and gain EXP; you'll need to return later with new abilities to discover new things anyway. You can travel back and forth between the real world and Nexus between stages, you're not stuck in the virtual world forever. And for each save file slot, there's a two saves: one for saving in the real world and one which is used while in Nexus. Therefore, you can always back-track to an earlier save that took place prior to entering a server without having to constantly make copies of your save file to other slots or other cards (You're not trapped a linear game with limited health, bullets, and ink ribbons ).
Review
Not only does the game have excellent gameplay and control, it has a deep storyline that ties in with the plots behind the tournaments in the previous Virtua Fighter games (the plots are revealed). The game has plenty of cinematics and each character including the numerous Virtua Fighters have voices and speak during cutscenes. It's only been out since mid January and has become a bit hard to find, and therefore the game is under appreciated. You won't even find a single code or walkthrough as of the current time at Gamefaqs, only 2 reviews (7/10 and 9/10). I found it in the "New Releases" at EB for $40, but don't expect to find it in Walmart. Check www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=virtuaquest for screenshots and more info. Give this game a try .
