Yea it's midnight and here I am breaking a sweat to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Here is the first of what seems to be many of Sonic invading the Mario turf. Or because it's Sega's game, is it the other way. Either way here we have characters from the Mushroom Kingdom and characters from Mobius(or is it Earth now....). Either way, it's not like either one is sporting a flag from a respective country in the biggest sporting event, yet they star and endorse it.
Well like the summer games, it has your track and field, your table tennis, your fencing, your swimming. Each have their own moveset with the Wiimote and nunchuk, either by waving or jabbing, but some, if not all games has to add some complex way to start off. Pressing the B button to charge, then let go while waving the Wiimote for a dash, then repeatable shaking of the Wiimote and Nunchuk. Or for shooting, aim to the heart icon in the center and shhot when a dot hits a small circle, that'll increase your range for shots(This all before each of the 8 rounds of shooting. Table tennis is touch cause it's a very tough WiiSports Tennis really.
The games are basically trial and error, if you practiced a bit, you can nail it every time and frustrate your friends when you have them over and destroy them. But with all the party games on the system, like Mario Party and Rayman, Mario and Sonic is a decent game in a crowded field.
It does have its charm though. First, it's Mario vs Sonic! That's like the equivalent to pirates vs ninjas fighting in a chocolate world.... with Cowboy medics. That alone gives this game a look. But the selection of characters wasn't very well made. Personally, I'm insulted that Cream is a ref and not playable, yet Vector and Blaze are! And I realized that my two favorite characters aren't in the game when I realized that there was a trampoline and no Rouge! I mean where's right and left?! This would have warranted a purchase if they were in it!
...Where was I? Oh yea, charm.... missing my lucky charms. But also there's online leader boards so all the buff Wii owners can gloat their scores to people you'll never meet. as well as unlockable games, like the Dream Courses where you can do cool things like hurdles with Mario Kart style item combat. You can also play as your Mii, which is pretty new with this type of game(wait, I can play as a freaking Mii, but not Cream?!)
Unfortunately, the lack of simple pick up and play makes this party game only for the collections of the Mario and Sonic elite fanboys. Any casual gamer that the Wii screams out for will be totally confused over the controls. Not only that, these fanboys have to deal with a ton of tiring motions and try to last a few rounds.
The cool part was underneath the instruction manual, there's an ad for NiGHTS. It's nice that Sega's doing a lot with Sonic on Wii, but don't drag Mario to his level of quality.
