I (FINALLY) started Path of Radiance a week ago because Ike is my favorite Smash Bros character, so I wanted to know him more. Well after 25 hours of playing, I beat it. Wonderful, wonderful game, one great example of how to make a tactical. Wonderful story, characters, setting and flow were perfect. My favorite thing is that you don't have to grind the same levels over and over to level up(I hate Disgaea 2 and Etna mode in the PSP remake cause of this) because the next stage is stupidly tough(you don't have to grind because you completely can't). And maxing out your characters before beating the game feels very rewarding when you go in the last fight.
Weapons are unique also. They have HP, so every slash of the sword or swing of the axe decreases it by one (non repairable) HP. Once it goes to 0, it breaks. Actually I lied, you can only repair 3 weapons throughout the entire game, and only at the tail end of the story. The game also has an excellent create your own weapon option. you buy an new weapon that you have, but you can enhance it with more(or less) power, chance of hitting, chance of getting a crit(critical hit) or weight. Then you can choose the color of the item and the best part, customizing its name. I like to be creative, after busting out a Silver Sword with 20,000 Gold (that's a lot) worth of enhancements(high crit mostly) and flashing it up with a gold paint job(orange really), only the most sophisticated name is eligible for a sword of this magnitude. So after much thinking, I thought of a beautiful name for this high quality weapon: "Rape Rapier." Man I love it when they don't censor stuff, I have a ton more non sophisticated names for weapons too lol.
My problem was you cannot save midbattle(other than a temp suspending feature). Why? The problem mostly is that in Fire Emblem, there's a trick with this game if you dunno already. If your character's HP goes to 0, they die: Permanently. It's a cool feature, but not without it's little problem. Do you want any character you built up dying? No, so if that does happen, you quickly reset. But it's a pain if you're an hour in and the boss scores a critical hit on your allies and blowing them away. Also wish there was more of those beautiful cutscenes that you get to see in that game. Ike's voice was better in Brawl as well, he sounds too young in Path.
I played Path on Easy difficulty, because it had the best flow of gameplay, not much to worry about in a game where you're confined to being paranoid about every member's health. Especially the weak ones, like Clerics, which can get cut down in one swipe. Later on in the game, even easy, you're on the edge hoping character survive the next turn.
Well, right off the heels of Path, I decided to strictly continue the trend with the Wii sequel, Radiant Dawn. Well I was. You see, when Path came to the US, it was given said easy mode that the Japanese release lacked(Japanese's version actually had a Maniac mode, which was harder than its Hard, sheesh). Well the Quality Assurance dept at Nintendo of America had forgotten that it seems, because there's a big bug.
There's this great unique feature in Radiant Dawn where if you have beaten Path of Radiance, your Wii will import data from your GCN memory card to enhance your quest. Very nifty feature. Well here's the bug. Nintendo didn't seem to edit the import data coding for the American release. Since I beat it on easy, I cannot import the data(since Easy never existed to the original version). It's not like I'm straight out denied to do it cause it's on easy, or else it wouldn't be a bug. Instead, the game and console completely crashes, requiring to unplug the Wii and restart it.
I remember playing Radiant Dawn to test out when it came out in November. Game's hard as hell. Got destroyed in the first fight. I'll bitch to Nintendo, since maybe newer copies were fixed. That happens sometimes, like Smash Bros. Melee, or MUCH more notably, GTA: San Andreas. I also think that Nintendo woulda done that in their D/L updates, but I'll check first before people start dying.
If you played Fire Emblem, what do you think of it? And if you have, don't you agree that Path of Radiance could be a very mature game if it showed the blood, gore, and effects of attacks(ex:an axe slicing a luguz in half), because the game likes to talk about that.
Also in related news, a while back, we were shown Fire Emblem DS, obviously for the DS. But what I recently found out, it's a remake to Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragons and the Blade of Light. If you dunno which one is that, it's the very first Fire Emblem back on the NES. That's Marth's Fire Emblem! It'll of course use the 2 screens's capabilities, but will be the first in the series to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for multiplayer.
